Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
