A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
